This paper presents the results of composting hop biomass (hop leaves and stems remaining after cone harvest) on six hop-growing farms. Although composting was intended to follow established guidelines for hop biomass composting, farms encountered various implementation challenges during the process. These were documented and their effects on the quality of the produced compost were assessed. The most pronounced negative impact was observed under insufficient turning: when the pile was turned only twice in autumn, the sanitisation temperature (55°C) was not reached, decomposition was incomplete, nutrient content in the compost was moderate, and the C:N ratio was unfavourable. In contrast, the compost with the best quality parameters was obtained when the guidelines were followed consistently, including regular turning based on temperature measurements, using a sufficiently large biomass pile (15 tonnes), and timely covering of the piles.
